SEO tutorial for beginners

Remember to add

  • Google adsense to your website
  • An error page
  • A robots.txt file in your home folder (allowing and forbidding, to specific robots, specific areas of your site)
  • A sitemap

About the url of your pages

  • Chose a good domain (should be easy to remember and should contain keywords)
  • Folders, pages and images names should contain keywords
  • Separate the keywords of the file names with dashes or underscore to make them recognizable from the search engines (dashes are more user friendly)
  • Avoid dynamical url
  • Avoid to rename files and folders (the indexed pages will lose their pagerank)
  • Redirect pages if necessary (i.e. you can take profit of inbound links also from pages that have been moved or removed)

Check periodically

  • The rank of your websites under different searches
  • The rank of your websites with different search engines
  • The pagerank of your website
  • The Alexa ranking (use the Alexa toolbar)
  • Google Analytics

Keep in mind

  • The search engines's algoritms change often
  • Your website can be excluded from geographical searches so build it where you want it to be found
  • Your website can be excluded from searches in specific languages
  • Each time an user visits your site and clicks "back" to go out, he increase the bounce-rate of your site (that is bad for SEO), so try to keep the users as much as possible in your site (at least half minute) and, of course, don't click "back" so quickly when you visit your own website
  • SEO is a continuous process, the optimization shouldn't be done once
